Send Something Unique for Mother’s Day!

goodies-mother-s-day-image

Since becoming a mother over six years ago, I  always look forward to getting the handmade artwork or crafts that my daughter makes for me for Mother's Day!  I think I am pretty easy to shop for (my husband might disagree) as I love flowers and treats on Mom's Day but trying to figure out what to get my mom can cause me a bit of stress!  Not this year though! Recently,  I came across The Goodies Company (love this name) that provides a monthly box of snacks delivered right to the door.  Subscribers to the Goodies Co. … [Read more...]

Some Fun Ideas to Encourage Healthy Eating

FoodasArt.597b8119c9acbb4cbc9fcc93caadcdfd

When I came back from Japan years ago I had some major health issues that no one could seem to help me with.  I went to over ten doctors and usually came back home with a bag of prescription pills.  This was not how I wanted to live my life and start each day with a handful of pills!  Fortunately, I met a nutritionist at a Natural Products Expo, where the Japanese company I was working for was exhibiting (I sold medicinal mushrooms - but that is another story).  Turns out, after an hour consultation and analysis -- he was was able … [Read more...]

Awareness :: Bake Sale for No Kid Hungry

ShareOurStrength.3598032973_c5a9ffce87_z

Last year I did research for a post I wrote for a community website about the hungry in America.  I was absolutely shocked at the number of children in the states who go to bed hungry.  In the state of California, the Childhood Food Insecurity Rate is at 26.8% which equates to 2,453,770 children. These numbers just break my heart and I make it a point to drop off canned goods at our local food bank with my daughter as often as I can. Recently, I came across an organization that is helping to end childhood hunger and I … [Read more...]

Recipe:: Stay Hydrated with Fruit Flavored Water

Fruit Flavored Water

Homemade Fruit Flavored Water: I love flavored water but I don't like the added sugars or sweeteners that you find in the store, so I just make my own. It's very easy. Just gather some fruit and some herbs and you're ready to go. For this water I made an all Citrus, (no herbs) mixture. It's a great picker-upper for those coming warm summer days. If your kids are used to sugary drinks, they probably won't take to it at first, but give them some time and they will come to love the sweet natural flavors without the extra … [Read more...]

Gluten Free Frozen Yogurt Fruit Bites

D-frozenjpg

I love to have fun snacks for my kids that are healthy as well as tasty. I also look for snacks that are easy to make. Since I eat gluten free, I try to find snacks that will work for me as well as for my kids. For this snack, I cut up some fruit and dipped the small bites size pieces in Greek Yogurt. I used honey flavored, but you can use vanilla, or plain yogurt too.  Greek Yogurt is a little thicker, so I find that it works betters than regular yogurt. After the fruit pieces are dipped in the yogurt, place them on parchment paper and put … [Read more...]

Recipes: Easy English Trifle

photo-11

Trifle has been around for centuries and is a classic English dessert. It consists of layers of cake, usually soaked with alcohol such as sherry (you may also use fruit juice for the family-friendly version), fruit, custard and cream. There are many variations, but here is our family’s passed down to me by my own English mum. It would make an easy spring-time dessert when you don’t feel like turning on the oven. It would also make a beautiful addition to your Easter buffet. We’ve always used ladyfingers for the cake … [Read more...]

With St. Patrick's Day coming up we have some last-minute ideas to help celebrate this fun day!  Coming from FamilyFun Magazine, these are some ideas you can whip up pretty quickly.  I just might do the food rainbow one tonight when my daughter goes to bed and tell her that a leprechaun must have made it for her overnight and that he probably wants her to eat some of those vegetables.  But instead of guacamole, I will use hummus instead. Oh, the art of getting my kid to eat more vegetables!  A tale I think many parents are … [Read more...]

Health Question: Nourishing Your Sluggish Thyroid

Health-Question-Mark

Ask The Doctor: By Dr. Heather Manley Question:  What can you do to support thyroid health. I have Hashimoto's disease, but thyroid hormones are in the normal range. TSH was high (4.58, but brought down to 2.1), but has improved with a whole food diet. Any suggestions? Your thyroid gland controls your metabolism; therefore, if you are gaining weigh, feeling tired and cold, your thyroid gland might be slowing down thus effecting your metabolism. There are certain vitamins and minerals that the thyroid needs to function … [Read more...]

Cherry Almond Granola (or Baked Muesli)

photo-10

A Mom's Quest for a Healthy Breakfast: On my quest to better health for my family, I have tried to stop buying boxed cereals. Good bye Raisin Bran, Honey Bunches, and Cheerios. You served us well for the past 11 years. Sure, you’re convenient, but now that I'm older and wiser I've come to the realization that I can do better. Let's face it...you’re processed. And what about all that sugar? It would be great if my kids liked steel-cut oatmeal, but I missed that boat. It's hard to convert a kid that has been brought up on the sweet … [Read more...]
