The iPad: Tool or Toy?

childwithiPad.6664788463_5ff04bc99d_z

Where does the iPad fit in the life of today’s child? Is it a tool or toy? Is it really an either/or proposition? Do you ever feel like you have to justify (to yourself, family, friends) letting your child get engrossed with the iPad? Do thoughts such as these crowd your mind? Reading is important! Digging in the dirt is important! Building gas stations is important! Pretending to be a pirate is important! The iPad is just a toy!! Actually, it's much more than a toy. Really? “Prove it,” the guilty … [Read more...]

Feng Shui For Your Home

Front door

Image: Flickr   Have you ever walked into a home before and immediately liked it? Perhaps it was light, bright and airy? It was welcoming and comfortable, and you felt great while you were there.  You could say this house has good feng shui. If you haven’t heard of this term before, in Chinese it means ‘wind and water’. Feng shui (pronounced foong shway) is the ancient Chinese practice of arranging the layout of your home to promote happiness, harmony and wellbeing. And the great thing about feng shui is that it doesn’t require a … [Read more...]

Eating Gluten-Free And Loving It!

crustless-quiche

When I first started eating 'gluten-free', most of the foods I found to eat were nasty, with a capital 'N'. I tried all kinds of products made with gluten-free flours, and almost everything I tried was seriously yucky. The most brutal lesson for me was at Thanksgiving. I planned to make a yummy stuffing with store-bought gluten-free bread. I figured that with enough butter and spices I could create a delicious tongue-exploding wonder that my gluten-eating family members would think was the best tasting experience of their lives... I would … [Read more...]

Friendship Between Two Female Hearts

HEART.Beach.3990178177_1dc1ae6ee8_z

In my early twenties it occurred to me that friendships are an active experience. It was early summer and I’d sent an email to Katie, my closest girlfriend in college, telling her I thought it wasn't a good idea for us to live together the following semester. I felt our lifestyles weren't conducive to sharing an apartment. A week or so later, with courage gained from several drinks at her local bar, she called me in the middle of the night to let me know exactly how she felt. Kate was angry and hurt not only about my decision, … [Read more...]

ARTIST: Eli Halpin

ELI.Peacock in Metallic Pearl White 23.75 x 23.75 inches

I asked my good friend Jennifer Mercede for some artists she could recommend as I want to feature artists in all their glory on dandelion moms as I feel art can move and inspire us.  One of my favorite things to do pre-kid (and when I had more time on my hands), was to go to estate sales as you can find the best abstract artwork from the 1950's in our parts of the woods.  My entire house is filled with this estate sale art as well as from some of my favorite local artists  including Jennifer Mercede. One of her … [Read more...]
